Skincare and Haircare Tips for Monsoon

After bearing extreme heat and getting sunburned and tanned skin along with sweaty and stinky clothes, monsoon has arrived as a sign of relief. One cannot ignore the freshness in the air with the sweet fragrance of wet sand and the lush green trees around. Just like every good thing comes with a price, monsoon also comes with its share of skin problems. The humid weather can make your skin look dull and give rise to a lot of infections. Sometimes, the skin can get extremely oily and lead to nasty acne and sometimes it can also lead to dehydrated and dull skin. Hence, it is important to change your skincare routine according to the season.

Skincare Tips for Monsoon

  1. Cleanse AWAY THE DIRT: Indian monsoon brings a lot of dirt which comes and settles on the skin. Thus, cleansing an important routine to wipe away all the dirt and allow your skin to breathe properly.

  2. DRY SKIN: Use a hydrating face cleanser for dry skin. Home remedy: Honey+crushed almonds scrub, fresh fruit masks 2-3 times a week will nourish your skin and make it supple.

  3. OILY SKIN: Do not over-cleanse but use the right cleanser. Use a mild cleanser to keep the pores from getting clogged. Home remedy: Use an oatmeal scrub twice a week as a gentle exfoliator.

  4. MOISTURISING: Monsoon can have an extra dehydrating effect on dry skin and over moisturising effect on oily skin. Using light lotion-based moisturisers or serums is the key to keep skin healthy.

  5. UV PROTECTION: Summer or winter, monsoon or spring, the sun will never stop from rising and not even the densest of clouds can stop the UV rays to reach to your skin. Hence, it is mandatory to use a sunscreen even in monsoon.

  6. MAKEUP: Avoid applying heavy makeup and let your skin breathe. Store all the cosmetic products in a cool and dry place.

  7. FOOTWEAR: Wear Open footwear as closed shoes can make you sweat more which can become a breeding ground for bacteria and fungus and prone to infections.

Haircare Tips for Monsoon:

  1. Opt for a wide-toothed comb. No matter if your hair is oily, dry or frizzy, a wide-tooth comb is beneficial for all hair types. This can be even used on damp hair with minimum to no damage at all. Use brushes only when blow-drying your hair.

  2. Get a good waterproof headgear: It is wise to cover up your hair while swimming to avoid them from getting wet as the hair becomes brittle and susceptible to breakage and damage when they are wet.

  3. Eat a protein-rich diet: A protein-rich diet is not only helpful in controlling hair fall but also fighting multiple scalp diseases. Proteins play a vital role in building up body muscles and cell regeneration. You can also incorporate eggs, fatty fish and lean meat in your diet. If you are vegetarian then opt for soya, yoghurt, mushrooms, cheese and kale.

  4. Hold back styling products: We all know that styling products are like slow poison for our hair. They damage the scalp and hair slowly. So, it is advisable to avoid them in this humid weather of monsoon. These include hair styling products like hair sprays, gels, mousse pomade, hair dye etc.

  5. Change your shampoo: If your shampoo is not profiting your hair then it's time to switch your shampoo. Opt for clarifying shampoo or frizz control shampoo. If you are trying something new then start with a small pack for the trial to rule out any allergic reaction.

  6. Consult your dermatologist: Consulting your dermatologist is always advised. If required, they can add supplements to your daily routine, in case you are not eating sufficient or eating right. Commonly recommended supplements include iron, zinc, biotin, vitamin D and A. These will help to control hair fall but not replace your healthy diet.

  7. Stay hydrated: This is something which is always stressed upon and advised by everyone, be it your doctor or your parents. We all need at least 2L of water per day for proper cell functioning of our body. You can mix things up like clear soup, coconut water, green tea, fresh juice etc. to stay hydrated and fulfil the daily requirement of water.

If you have any concern related to skin and hair care, you can get in touch with your dermatologist to get your routine updated and checked regularly.
